Effects of Nitrogen Supplements on Intake and Utilization of Low Quality Forages

چکیده
Experiments conducted by the authors and their colleagues in the previous five years are summarized. It is concluded that dietary requirements for rumen-degradable, nitrogen (RDN) can be supplied entirely as nonprotein nitrogen (NPN): Also, that supplements of 'NPN and proteins are equally effective in stimulating forage intake, when intake of RDN in the forage is low, provided that intake of NPN is not too infrequent. When intake of NPN is too'infrequent, such as when grazing animals have access to urea/molasses blocks or licks, protein supplements are likely to be more effective as slow-release sources of RDN.

Effects of Levels of Ficus (Ficus sycomorus) Supplementation on Voluntary Feed Intake, Nutrient Digestibility and Nitrogen Balance in Yankasa Bucks Fed Urea Treated Maize Stover Basal Diet
The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of feeding varying levels of Ficus sycomorus leaf forages as protein supplements to a basal diet of urea treated maize stover. Four Yankasa goats averaging one year and weighing 11.7±1.8 kg were used to measure the feed intake, digestibility and nitrogen balance. The basal diet (urea treated maize stover) was supplemented with 0 (T1), 50 (T2), 100...
متن کاملEffects of increasing levels of corn or beet pulp on utilization of low-quality crested wheatgrass hay by lambs and in vitro dry matter disappearance of forages.
Two trials were conducted to evaluate the effects of corn or dried beet pulp on intake and digestibility of forage by lambs and on IVDMD. In Trial 1, 16 lambs (average BW = 41 +/- .9 kg) were used in a randomized complete block design with eight lambs per block. Lambs were fed a crested wheatgrass hay (7.5% CP) and received either no supplement (NS), a protein supplement (PS), or protein supple...
متن کاملEffect of supplementing Rhodes grass hay (Chloris gayana) with Berchemia discolor or Zizyphus mucronata on the performance of growing goats in Kenya.
Twenty growing Small East African goats were used to determine the effects of feeding sun-dried leaves of the browse forages Berchemia discolor and Zizyphus mucronata as supplements to low-quality basal diet, Rhodes grass (Chloris gayana) hay, on voluntary feed intake (VFI), digestibility and growth performance. The grass hay and maize bran were used as a control. The dried leaves were then inc...

The two approaches often are complementary, as treatments which increase intake or digestibility may generate a need for additional nutrients to supply the needs of rumen bacteria as well as of the host animal. In these papers we have considered nitrogen (N) requirements of rumen bacteria and of the animal, in animals fed untreated and chemically-treated forages of low nutritive value. The reas...
متن کاملEffects of supplementation on voluntary forage intake, diet digestibility, and animal performance.
A data base was constructed to describe and estimate supplementation effects in nonlactating cattle consuming forage ad libitum. The data base included 66 publications on 126 forages (73 harvested and 53 grazed) and a total of 444 comparisons between a control, unsupplemented treatment and a supplemented treatment. Daily gains were reported for 301 comparisons and voluntary intake for 258. Dire...
